Shark Teeth Fossils for sale
Sharks shed thousands of teeth in their lifetime. In order for these teeth to fossilize, once on the seabed they must quickly be covered by sediments. Fast burial is important for fossilization. First, the sediments act to protect the teeth from damage that could occur if exposed to open water and very strong currents dragging them around the sea bed. Secondly, being buried quickly by sediments will also cut off any oxygen and bacteria that can decay the teeth rapidly. The fossilization process is very slow it usually takes thousands of years. When shark teeth, start the fossilization process a state of processes occur when the permineralization process begins as water soaks down through the seabed and picks up minerals in the process that fills tiny pores in the teeth in turn filling the tooth with different minerals the types of minerals it picks up can sometimes change the colour of the fossilized teeth. Different minerals can include calcite that is a very common in most fossils found different silica’s also have a colour changing effect as with most teeth that are found there are not many that are of perfect condition some good teeth that are found with tiny chips on the serrations are called dings or feeder damage that naturally occurs in their life as they are chomping on the bones of whales ,mosasaurs and any other of the massive sea creatures it once ate in its lifetime some teeth have also been found buried in a whale vertebrae that fossilized together .
