Once a year the rockhounds  desend upon trona and searles lake in California to collect the pink haylite, salt crystals from an endorheic  dry lake  where the evaporate lake is approx. 12 miles long by 8 miles wide the pink haylite is coloured by millions of halobacteria that lives in the salt crust and by the algae that live in extreme salty conditions
